Zeolite for water filtration

Zeolita para filtración de agua

ZEOLITE for water filtration is a filter medium that companies operating and maintaining desalination and drinking water treatment plants around the world increasingly take into account.

Using ZEOLITE in the pretreatment stage delivers worthwhile energy and water savings, making it an ideal filter medium for meeting both productivity targets and the quality targets for product water intended for human consumption.

2021 and 2022 have been marked by change in water treatment, with the adoption of filter media that perform better than those used until now.

Ever more demanding water needs have pushed operators to optimise production processes as far as possible, driving the whole sector to look for solutions and improvements in areas that had not yet been explored.

Filter media are one such area, as progress in recent years had been linked more to technological development and research in ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis.

The search for more efficient solutions is now turning towards new-generation filter media: products designed to deliver higher performance while reducing the carbon footprint, in line with sustainability goals.

ZEOLITE for water filtration lengthens filter runs and reduces the number of backwashes, while continuing to deliver on key parameters such as SDI, turbidity and TSS reduction, which translates into lower OPEX.

For years, anthracite and silica sand were the standard media supplied for start-up or replacement, with different grading combinations used for each project to achieve improvements.

A compelling reason was needed to justify adopting new filter media, and that reason has been the need to increase treatment plant output to meet growing demand from the communities they serve, while maintaining quality.

In this context, new products such as ZEOLITE for water filtration have become not only a valid alternative but often a better one, simplifying the filter bed from multimedia beds to a ZEOLITE bed in two gradings supported directly on gravel: a simpler and more economical solution.

ZEOLITE works not only mechanically but also physico-chemically. Beds can take a much higher suspended solids load, at least doubling filter run times. Clogging and preferential flow paths are becoming less of a concern thanks to the way ZEOLITE works compared with silica sand, filtering not only at the surface but through almost the entire bed depth.

Unlike other filter media, ZEOLITE also provides ion exchange, with added advantages such as the removal of metals such as iron and manganese, and of other compounds such as ammonium.

ZEOMEDIA, KEIKEN’s ZEOLITE brand, is an alternative well worth considering when designing or replacing filter media in both seawater desalination and drinking water treatment.
