Water is essential for human beings and for all other living things on the planet. Around 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, and water makes up most of the human body. Because of its importance, water must be used well and treated properly to restore its original quality.
Using water well does not require a large investment; in many cases responsible use can be achieved through simple everyday changes:
• Fix a dripping tap as soon as possible: it can waste more than 30 litres a day.
• If you are going away for a few days, turn off the stopcock.
• Only run the washing machine and dishwasher when full.
• When washing up by hand, soap everything first and then rinse it all together.
• Take a shower instead of a bath: it uses about two-thirds less water.
• Choose an irrigation system suited to each plant.
These simple everyday steps can significantly reduce water consumption. For industrial water, however, responsible use must be promoted and the best treatment technologies used, adapted to each effluent.
Industrial wastewater comes from industrial processes such as producing goods, cleaning or auxiliary services, which alter its composition and quality. The main challenge is the variety of its composition and the high flow rates involved, which make treatment design more difficult.
Poorly treated industrial effluent can cause problems such as:
- Changes in water characteristics.
- Unpleasant odours and tastes, and septic conditions.
- Hardening of the water by inorganic salts, making it unusable for industrial, domestic or agricultural use.
- Changes in pH.
- Temperature changes that affect dissolved oxygen in rivers.
In industry, one of the best ways to use water well is to optimise treatment, tailoring it to each effluent and reducing environmental impacts.
