Microplastics in drinking water

Microplásticos en el agua potable

Studies have found that 83% of tap water samples from cities and towns around the world contained microplastic fibres. The samples included water from well-known restaurants and even some bottled water, so bottled water is not a viable solution. Microplastics have been found not only in drinking water but also in the oceans, and people are believed to ingest them through contaminated seafood. Their health impact is not yet known, but the precautionary principle should be followed and global microplastic pollution avoided while their effects are investigated.

Microplastics can come from degrading bottles and bags, synthetic clothing and even some cosmetic products. Knowing the source is essential to prevent the impact where it originates.

Solutions

A long-term solution is to produce materials that are safer for health than conventional plastics, such as bioplastics. Short-term solutions are also needed, such as fitting membranes and filters to washing machines to prevent the release of synthetic clothing fibres. Another effective solution is advanced water treatment of the kind carried out at KEIKEN Engineering.

KEIKEN ENGINEERING offers solutions in FILTRATION, membranes and water treatment.
