Tourism is one of the main drivers of the Spanish economy, and hotels are one of the services tourists use most. Hotels need large amounts of energy to keep their guests comfortable, including temperature, acoustics and lighting, which makes them good candidates for energy efficiency measures.
The first step is an energy audit to establish energy consumption and identify the improvements to make. These energy efficiency improvements reduce consumption, making the hotel more efficient and environmentally friendly, cutting CO2 emissions and its carbon footprint, while delivering very significant savings.
Some of the energy efficiency measures for hotels are:
– Reviewing contracted power, reducing the electricity bill and switching energy source. The hotel’s electricity consumption should be studied and the contracted power adjusted to actual consumption, with a margin for flexibility, additional equipment and seasonal peaks. At KEIKEN we carry out the study and adjustment, and arrange the switch to renewable, high-efficiency energy sources.
– Reviewing and switching to LED lighting. Lighting efficiency should be analysed and, where luminaires, lamps and bulbs use old, inefficient technology, a switch to low-energy LED technology should be considered.
– Installing ENERTEQ energy savers. These energy savers reduce energy demand while protecting installed equipment and extending its service life, supporting sustainability.
ENERTEQ has numerous success stories with energy demand reductions of up to 20%, including references in the hotel sector such as Hotel Mediterráneo**** and Hotel Edén**.
– Installing presence sensors. A key measure to significantly reduce lighting energy use, especially in corridors and common areas.
– Reviewing the building envelope and insulation. Check heat transfer between the building and its surroundings, analysing its geometry, orientation and window placement, and reinforcing areas where significant heating or cooling is lost.
– Monitoring and building automation. Effective control of all parameters, providing energy security.
– Reviewing and upgrading heat sources. Where boilers are old and very inefficient, replacing them with more efficient technology should be considered. A good alternative is to study renewable sources such as biomass boilers, heat pumps, solar panels or geothermal energy. KEIKEN and its partners can carry out this study.
