- Anthracite for water filtration
Anthracite
Anthracite is a mineral coal with a high carbon content which, crushed and graded, is used as a filtration medium. Its angular shape and low density allow it to filter in depth: longer filter runs and fewer backwashes. Compliant with EN 12909.
What is anthracite used for in water treatment?
To retain suspended solids. It is used on its own or, more commonly, as the top layer of a multimedia filter over sand, garnet or gravel.
Answers to your questions about anthracite
What is anthracite used for as a filtration medium?
To retain suspended solids, usually as the top layer of a multimedia filter over sand or garnet. Its angular shape allows depth filtration with low head loss.
Which standard does KEIKEN anthracite comply with?
EN 12909 and AWWA B100 for water intended for human consumption, with internationally recognised NSF certification.
Why does it reduce backwash frequency?
Because its angular shape and lower density spread solids retention throughout the depth of the bed instead of concentrating it at the surface. Head loss rises more slowly and the filter run is longer.
Can it be combined with other media?
Yes, and it is the most common use: dual-media filters with sand, or multimedia filters with garnet and support gravel.
In what formats is it supplied?
In 1 m³ big bags and 25 kg sacks.
What grading do I need?
It depends on the flow rate, the filtration area, the inlet water quality and the expected filtration rate.
What is anthracite?
A mineral coal with a high carbon content. For filtration it is crushed and graded by particle size; its angular shape and low density place it in the top layer of the bed.

We are a B Corp company
B Corp certification independently assesses a company’s environmental and social performance, transparency and legal accountability. For us, it is more than a label: it provides a framework for our technical decisions. Every plant we design is also assessed for its energy consumption, the water footprint it helps reduce and its impact where it is installed.
