What is pumice used for in water treatment?

Pumice is particularly suitable for desalination and drinking water treatment plants. Its low specific gravity, high porosity and filtration properties make it a suitable alternative for desalination and SWRO applications. Its hydraulic characteristics make it well suited to filtering water with a high concentration of suspended solids, helping reduce SDI and turbidity.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to your questions about pumice

It is used to filter water with a high concentration of suspended solids, helping reduce SDI and turbidity. Applications include desalination and SWRO, wastewater, industrial water and drinking water treatment.

It has a lower specific gravity and higher porosity, which can support higher hydraulic loading rates. It can be used as an alternative to anthracite in the same filter-bed position.

Yes. Its ability to reduce SDI and turbidity is one of its advantages and is why it is used in SWRO pretreatment.

UNE-EN 12906:2013 for the treatment of water intended for human consumption.

Its open-pit extraction gives it a very low carbon footprint compared with other filtration media.

It is supplied in 1 m³ big bags.

We are a B Corp company

B Corp certification independently assesses a company’s environmental and social performance, transparency and legal accountability. For us, it is more than a label: it provides a framework for our technical decisions. Every plant we design is also assessed for its energy consumption, the water footprint it helps reduce and its impact where it is installed.
