FILTRATION · DESALINATION
LOCATION
Empalme, Sonora
APPLICATION
Desalination
MEDIA SUPPLIED
Zeolite
PLANT FLOW RATE
17,280 m³/day (200 L/s)
The Guaymas-Empalme desalination plant, in Sonora, was designed to produce 200 L/s of drinking water, equivalent to 17,280 m³/day. The project helps diversify supply sources in an area under high water stress.
Intake is through beach wells and the main treatment uses reverse osmosis. KEIKEN references the supply of zeolite for the pretreatment and filtration stage, where solids control is essential to protect the membranes and stabilise operation.
The project was developed through a 20-year public-private partnership and is publicly linked to Aqualia. Production is estimated to cover a significant share of demand in Guaymas and Empalme and could benefit around 100,000 inhabitants.
