Compact wastewater treatment plants for small communities

Plantas compactas de depuración de agua para pequeñas poblaciones

Wastewater treatment is one of the most effective ways to prevent environmental pollution. Treatment methods vary widely because water types differ greatly. There are four main sources of wastewater: domestic or municipal, industrial, agricultural run-off and rainwater.

When designing treatment, wastewater from a metalworking plant is not the same as wastewater from a food processing plant: food industry wastewater has a high organic load, while metalworking wastewater contains metal and ionic compounds.

Because of these characteristics, biological treatment with settlement or UF would generally suit the first case, and advanced oxidation, chemical precipitation, ion exchange, reverse osmosis (RO) or membrane distillation (MD) the metalworking effluent. However, each wastewater must be analysed to establish the most suitable treatment.

The compact plants designed and built by KEIKEN are a strong solution for food and industrial wastewater treatment, wastewater reuse and drinking water treatment for small communities, including seawater and brackish water desalination. Each compact plant is tailored to the characteristics of the water and the end use or treatment level required. Some of the compact plant technologies KEIKEN offers are:

Reverse osmosis (RO) plants. These produce water free of salts and dissolved matter, using semi-permeable membranes that let water through and retain other substances such as salts and solids. RO is used to desalinate water for human consumption, irrigation and process water.

MED and MSF plants. Thermal desalination processes, either multi-effect distillation (MED) or multi-stage flash (MSF), developed mainly for drinking water production.

Membrane distillation plants. A desalination process driven by the vapour pressure difference across a hydrophobic membrane, separating volatile from non-volatile matter and rejecting virtually all solids and non-volatile matter. KEIKEN’s membrane distillation plants can be hybridised with renewable energy, delivering significant savings and reducing non-renewable energy use, CO2 emissions and the carbon footprint. These compact plants are well suited to small communities and to remote areas or areas with power cuts, increasing operational security independently and sustainably.

Ion exchange demineralisation plants. Plants that treat water with ion exchange resins. KEIKEN’s compact plants include an automatic cleaning system that activates when the required quality is not reached, regenerating the resins with acid and alkaline solutions.
