How to choose between liquid bag filters and cartridge filters

¿Cómo elegir entre filtros de bolsa de líquido y filtros de cartucho?

Water treatment equipment such as liquid bag filters and cartridge filters is essential for removing impurities and contaminants from water, making it safe for consumption and for a range of industrial processes. Both capture particles and contaminants effectively, protecting public health and the environment.

Understanding the difference between bag filters and cartridge filters for water filtration is key to effective filtration. Although they serve similar purposes, they differ significantly in design and function, and this is what determines the right choice for each application.

Bag filters

The dirt-holding capacity and flow rate of bag filters vary from one manufacturer to another, so it is important to define the filtration objectives before buying. They are a cost-effective option for industries where a self-cleaning system is not justified. Sectors such as mining, chemicals and food production use bag filters to purify liquids by trapping debris in the permeable filter material.

Although they are less versatile than cartridge filters and offer less surface area, bag filters suit smaller operations, where they are economical and effective. They work well in small batch processes, keeping clogging and disposal costs down and producing less solid waste than cartridge filters.

Cartridge filters

Cartridge filters are versatile modular filters used across all sectors to remove debris from liquids. There are two main types: surface and depth. Surface filters trap particles on the surface of the filter medium, while depth filters use layered media to retain debris throughout their thickness.

The micron rating of the filter determines its flow capacity: coarser ratings allow higher flow, but can let through particles in applications that require fine filtration.

Cartridge filters are widely applicable and efficient, with uses in many industries from cosmetics to pharmaceuticals. They are easy to maintain and suitable for ultrapure water filtration. Their cost varies, and they can be tailored to specific needs.

Bag filters vs cartridge filters

Bag filters and cartridge filters are both classed as sediment filters and play an important role in separating debris of different sizes from liquids. Some models can also be used for gas filtration. Both are widely used in commercial and industrial applications.

Although their overall purpose is the same, the way they work differs significantly. Bag filters use a porous bag-shaped structure to trap particles, while cartridge filters use a cylindrical cartridge containing the filter medium. Each design has its own advantages and limitations in terms of flow rate, particle size and maintenance requirements.

Choosing between bag filters and cartridge filters therefore requires a clear understanding of the application’s filtration needs. A thorough assessment and advice from filtration specialists lead to an informed decision and good performance.

Who are cartridge filters for?

In swimming pools, cartridge filters give better water clarity, but need more maintenance than sand filters. They can capture particles down to 10 microns, while sand filters typically filter down to around 20 microns. To put this in perspective:

  • Dust (10–20 microns): cartridge filters remove practically all of it, while sand filters only trap the larger particles.
  • Mould and plant spores (5–10 microns): cartridge filters trap the larger spores but may let smaller ones through; sand filters are less effective.
  • Lint (10–20 microns): cartridge filters capture it, while sand filters let most of it through.
  • Pollen (10–200 microns): cartridge filters remove it, which makes them preferable for people sensitive to pollen; sand filters may let some smaller particles through.

In short, cartridge filters give clearer pool water by removing finer particles, making them a good choice for those willing to put in some extra maintenance for better water quality.
