To limit that impact, strict legislation penalises illegal discharges and requires effluent to be treated to standards that prevent or reduce harm to the natural environment.<\/p>\n<p>As treatment advances, higher removal rates are achieved and the concentration of unwanted compounds in discharged effluent falls significantly. At the same time, discharge limits have become stricter, and some municipal and industrial wastewater treatment works have been unable to meet the required standards after changes in legislation. One of the best solutions is MBBR technology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MBBR (moving bed biofilm reactor) technology<\/strong> uses a biological reactor in which the microorganisms that break down pollutants grow on mobile media with a high specific surface area, known as carriers. The carriers are kept in suspension and continuous motion by the aeration system.
