It is processed to create very small pores that greatly increase its surface area, making it well suited to adsorption. This high microporosity can give activated carbon a surface area of more than 2,500 m² per gram.

Activated carbon is made from natural products, waste materials and a range of carbonaceous raw materials. In fact, any organic material with a high carbon content can be turned into activated carbon through thermal decomposition, physical modification and chemical reactions.

Activated carbon for water treatment has applications across many industries. The most common include:

air purification

water purification

agriculture

fuel storage

metal extraction

medical uses

wastewater treatment

solvent recovery

gold recovery

food processing.

Its main applications in water treatment and purification are described below.

Activated carbon for water purification

Activated carbon is used widely in water treatment because its highly porous structure and large surface area make it a good adsorbent for many contaminants.

It can be used in many water treatment applications and is particularly important in municipal and industrial treatment plants. Its main uses include:

groundwater remediation

wastewater treatment

process water treatment

drinking water purification

groundwater recovery.

Activated carbon removes impurities in the remediation of contaminated groundwater and in water treatment, where it is used as a polishing step at the end of the process to remove:

dissolved organic compounds

non-biodegradable compounds.

When wastewater has been treated upstream, granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration is a reliable, cost-effective treatment for waste streams that often contain complex mixtures of chemicals. After a period of service, the spent GAC is replaced with thermally reactivated GAC.

Drinking water treatment

Water utilities supply clean, safe water to drinking water networks. Activated carbon helps them deliver water that is safe to drink and free from unpleasant tastes, colours and odours.

Activated carbon removes natural and synthetic organic contaminants from surface water and groundwater, as well as disinfection by-products and potentially harmful residual oxidants formed during drinking water treatment.

Wastewater treatment

In wastewater treatment plants, activated carbon removes dissolved and non-biodegradable organic compounds after physical and biological pretreatment has removed the solids and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).

Granular activated carbon is used in fixed filter beds, in moving-bed configurations or in standalone adsorbers. Powdered activated carbon, by contrast, is dosed into a coagulation tank or applied with an activated sludge process.

Process water treatment

Many industries and processes rely on GAC to purify water to the strict standards their processes require, including beverage production, power generation and microelectronics.

These industries often use mains water that contains organic contaminants. Activated carbon is a proven technology for removing organic and chemical contaminants to meet process water purity requirements in a wide range of applications, such as those below.

Bottled water, beverages and breweries

Removal of residual chloramines, chlorine, hydrogen sulphide and hydrogen peroxide from mains water, and polishing.

Refineries and power stations

High-purity, consistent condensate with low silica leaching. Activated carbon removes mineral oil from condensate, reduces heat transfer resistance in boilers and improves the return of condensate to the boiler feedwater.

Ultrapure water

Pharmaceuticals: removing chlorine, chloramine and organic substances helps protect downstream reverse osmosis (RO) membranes and provides contaminant-free water for drug discovery, development and manufacturing.

Microelectronics: removal of particles and inorganic and ionic contaminants, and reduction of organic carbon to parts-per-billion levels. This helps users improve yields and reduce life-cycle costs in the flat-panel display, semiconductor and photovoltaic industries.

Haemodialysis: removing organic contaminants and chlorine from the water is an essential step in providing ultrapure water for the haemodialysis treatment of patients with impaired kidney function.

Aquaculture and mariculture

Adsorption of hormones, polyaromatic hydrocarbons and medicinal residues from fish farms in freshwater and seawater.

Swimming pool water

Adsorption of disinfection by-products, chlorine–nitrogen compounds and chloramines that irritate bathers, helping pools meet the regulatory limits for harmful contaminants.

In summary

If you would like to use activated carbon for water treatment in your home or business, see our activated carbon or contact KEIKEN.
