But what if one day you turned on the tap and nothing came out? That is what is happening to millions of people around the world. By 2025, almost 9 out of 10 people could be living in places where access to drinking water is no longer as easy as it was. So what is causing the problem? There are many reasons.

Climate change, rising water consumption, pollution and failing water systems, among others. We can’t keep relying on the same old water sources; we need new ideas. One important idea being widely discussed is efficient seawater desalination: the process of turning salt water from the sea into fresh drinking water.

But can it really solve the problem? Find out in this article.

Why is water scarce?

The Earth has plenty of water, but most of it is salt water in the oceans, which we can’t drink. The fresh water we use is often scarce or far away. Droughts last longer, rainfall is irregular and pollution is damaging some of the clean water sources we used to rely on. On top of that, old pipes leak so much water it is like pouring money down the drain.

Places such as India, South Africa and the Middle East are already feeling the effects. They depend on rain or groundwater, which is not replenished quickly enough. Hoping for rain is no longer a solid plan.

Does desalination really work?

Here is the good news: desalination is no longer science fiction. It is happening today and helping millions of people, particularly in dry coastal areas where fresh water is scarce.

Saudi Arabia, for example, obtains more than half of its water through desalination — which makes sense, given that much of the country is desert.

Israel uses desalination for around 60% of its water, alongside smart water-saving techniques.

The United Arab Emirates relies heavily on it to keep cities and industry running.

Australia built desalination plants during droughts, notably in Perth.

Spain uses it to meet the needs of tourist areas along its coast.

So desalination is real, it works and it is already making a difference.

Why does efficiency matter so much?

The ocean is huge, so why worry about efficiency? Because turning salt water into fresh water takes a lot of energy and, without care, it can harm the environment. That is why efficiency matters:

The ocean won’t run dry, so desalination can provide water even when it doesn’t rain.

It helps cities grow without depleting valuable rivers and lakes.

Modern plants not only remove salt but also treat the water to make it safe.

Solar, wind and better technologies are making desalination cheaper and more environmentally sound every year.

If desalination were not efficient, it would be too expensive and too harmful to the environment. Fortunately, it keeps improving. There are still challenges: the process uses a lot of energy, even with solar and wind; the leftover salt water, or brine, must be handled carefully to protect marine life; plants are costly to build; seawater desalination is only possible near the coast; and plants need skilled staff to operate.

None of this is insurmountable. With smart planning, better technology and an experienced team, these issues can be managed.

Conclusion

As technology improves and costs fall, efficient seawater desalination will play an increasingly important role in securing water for cities, farms and factories. We can no longer just wait for rain or rely on rivers.

If you want to know how desalination could help your factory or project, Keiken Engineering is dedicated to making desalination smarter, cleaner and more energy-efficient.
